In the wee hours of the morning on the 4th of July, we’ll be embarking on what has become an annual trip to visit my mom. The drive is 470 miles and close to 10 hours when you figure in food and bathroom stops. Last year, Luke was only 6 months old and spent much of the trip sleeping. This year will be a whole different ball game.

It’s no secret that my kids are techy. I mean, with me as mother, did they really have a choice? With that in mind, they’ll each have an iPad loaded up with games and movies for the trip {yes, I know they’re spoiled}. Our new-to-us MINIVAN is also equipped with a DVD player so they can watch movies on that as well. Even still, I don’t imagine that will be enough to keep them entertained for the duration of the trip. At 18 months and 3.5, they have the attention span of a gnat, COMBINED.

That said, I spent a little time tonight scouring the web for road trip tips for families and activities to fill up the rest of their time in the car. There are a million awesome ideas out there for things to do, activities to DIY and snacks that pack well. You can see my entire collection here, but below are some of my favorites.

10 Ways to Keep Kids Happy on a Road Trip from I am Momma Hear Me Roar

My game plan?

  • Hit up the dollar store to see what treasures I can find – both edible and non
  • Make each of the boys a snack box and an activity box
  • Pack a soccer ball so they can run around a bit at rest stops
  • Buy them each a comfy travel outfit {I’m thinking knit shorts might be good}
  • Download this app so we can check out some interesting landmarks on the way
  • Print a big California map so they can see our progress

Tell me, what are your road trip tips? I’d love to hear them!
