MLK Day of Service + Me {Sponsored}

If you’ve read this blog for long, you know that breast cancer charities {and the Avon Foundation, specifically} are kind of my thing. I’ve walked in 2 Avon Walks and crewed or volunteered at all 10 of the Avon Walks for Breast Cancer in here in SoCal. Crewing the Avon Walks has become a family & friends thing for me and I love it!

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2012

About a week ago, I was shipping some hat orders {pink Viking hats, to be exact} and the girl one register over at the post office asked me about them. She mentioned that the patients she works with would LOVE them. Because I’m nosy, I asked what she does and she told me that she works at a local hospital coordinating {among other things, I’m sure} donations of hats for patients going through chemo – mostly breast cancer patients.

How is it that I never thought to do this before? I guess I’ve always focused more on the fundraising aspects of the fight against breast cancer than I have on the people who battle it every day {which sounds bad, I know}. One of the reasons that I love the Avon Foundation is that I know they help people in local communities who can’t afford prevention and/or treatment. They also fund things like Project Angel Food which brings food to homebound cancer patients. But there are so many more little things that could be done.

When I read somewhere that MLK’s birthday coincides with the National Day of Service on January 19th, I thought it seemed like such a great way to honor Dr. King’s memory. Since I’ve been a little ME focused lately I obviously didn’t have any service-related plans for the upcoming weekend, but I think maybe I’ll set aside a little time to do just that.

Over this 3 day weekend,  I’m committing to one hat per day to be donated to a patient at the Hoag Cancer Institute. I know 3 hats isn’t many, but if my hats can make the days of 3 people just a little brighter {not to mention their heads a little warmer}, I think it’s a great start. And who knows, maybe others will join in and my 3 hats could morph into 10 hats or 20 hats. Anything is possible.

This idea obviously kinda fell in my lap and I have all the tools I need to accomplish my goal, but maybe you have a service-related idea that you’re not sure how to put into action? Check out this Community Action Pack Toolkit from Take Part.com, a leading source of socially relevant news, opinion, entertainment, and information about ways to get involved with the issues that shape our lives.  The toolkit outlines the best of the resources on the web that exist to drive community engagement and action no matter what issue someone is facing.

Cool resource, right? Look around a bit in each of those sections, there’s some really interesting stuff that I’ve not seen before. I’d love to hear {in the comments} what you think about it, too.
